KB’S BACKGROUND & QUALIFICATIONS:
Throughout her growing up years Karin studied piano and classical violin. As a youngster she played in the Thalia Youth Symphony & Seattle Youth Symphony Summer School Junior Orchestra (1966) – as principal violinist. Her violin teachers included the late David Soter of the Seattle Symphony. She stopped her studies at the age of 18 preferring to pursue her interest in folk music.
Blaine learned to play the guitar at the age of twelve and learned countless songs from listening to records. Her early influences were The Weavers, the Rooftop Singers, Buffy St. Marie, P,P & M and Bob Dylan. She, also, listened to the Reverend Gary Davis, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Bill Broonzy and Mississippi John Hurt. She plays with a finger picking style akin to the Piedmont Style of finger picking used by the Rev. Gary Davis. She has studied the Piedmont Style with Jorma Kaukonen, Roy Bookbinder and Ernie Hawkins.
An award winning songwriter, Blaine’s songs were awarded spots on the KEZX FM radio’s Album Projects I & II in 1983 & 1986. She received regional airplay and recognition. In 1991 she was a songwriting finalist in the national New Folk songwriting contest at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, TX in 1991. She has three album length recordings, an EP and 2 digital single releases on her label, dudessdahlia records. Listen to her music on this site’s MUSIC page.
